4 must-see spots in the Adelaide Hills on your Sunday drive
While Adelaide is dubbed the city of churches and festivals, the Hills is famous for its Sunday drives. With our regions beautiful, winding, winery-filled roads, it comes as no surprise. It’s the kind of place where saying “let’s go for a Sunday drive” means a delightfully different experience, each time.
Of course, every Hill’s home dweller knows there’s nothing better than a drive with no destination in mind, so here’s a few of our favourite scenic drives that we’d like to share for the budding day tripper.
Adelaide Hills areas that are worth the drive
1. Stirling, Hahndorf & Mount Lofty
Round up the kids or your partner and friends, then head to Hahndorf. Start your day with a delicious brunch at the Haus. Grab your coffee and meander down Hahndorf’s charming main street. If you’re a sweet tooth, get ready to buy a few sweet treats.
If you overdo it on the truffles, work it off by hiking Mount Lofty. With that guilt gone, peruse the nearby botanic gardens before taking a short drive to Stirling to check out the weekend artisan markets. The roads on the outskirts of Stirling (around Heathfield, Mylor and Scott Creek) are well worth getting ‘lost’ in. These are popular towns, easily accessible from your Adelaide Hills property.
2. Woodside & Lobethal
Pass through Littlehampton and Nairne to get to Woodside and Lobethal. If you love chocolate (that’s you, truffle buyers), Melba’s famous chocolate factory is a must. Stop by Woodside Cheesewrights while you’re there, too. These small towns have big personalities (and gorgeous rolling hills in between).
3. Summertown & Uraidla
Back down in the foothills, tucked away behind Cleland Conservation Park are two, often-underrated, Hills towns: Summertown and Uraidla. As you’re driving through these charming towns, feel the very essence of the Adelaide Hills although, you might sense you’re in an Italian or French village.
If you love wine, stop off at a Mum and Pop-type cellar door, like Ashton Hills Vineyard in the neighbouring town. Once you’ve adventured enough and are ready for food, experience Uraidla’s Lost in a Forest wood oven wine lounge. 4. Strathalbyn & the Fleurieu Peninsula
Summer or winter, take a drive down to the Fleurieu Peninsula. Go via Strathalbyn for your mid-morning coffee fix, before continuing down the Peninsula (the scenic route, of course). You’ll see Ashbourne, Mount Observation and Currency Creek on your way through to Goolwa. Check out places like One Paddock Currency Creek Winery, Mount Jagged Wines, and the Steam Exchange Brewery. Then, swim off all those dishes and drinks.
