The best suburbs in the Adelaide Hills Series: Macclesfield

Almost perfectly positioned between Mount Barker and Strathalbyn, the quiet, quaint town of Macclesfield has a population of just 1,000 people

While Macclesfield is a good 15-minute drive from the main hub of the Hills (Mount Barker), it’s extremely accessible due to its central location. Take one route and you’ll get to Mount Barker, keep driving and you’ll read Aldgate, Stirling and Crafers (then the city) or go in the other direction to Strathalbyn.

Macclesfield exemplifies real Adelaide Hills living. It’s a town where you have all the peace in the world, then everything’s at your convenience within 15 minutes. Consider the real estate in this charming Adelaide Hills town.

The Macclesfield lifestyle

The charming part of Macclesfield is its size. It’s the kind of community where everyone knows everyone. You can wander down to places like Macclesfield Hotel for a meal and Longview Vineyard for a glass, to mingle with both locals and Sunday drivers.

Longview Winery is a darling, family-owned cellar door just outside the township. The wine is award-winning, and the views have tempted many a guest into moving here. It’s a gorgeous Adelaide Hills property.

For brunch food, head down to Maccy Shop and Café, Farmhouse Pantry (for gluten free options), and the retro tea room, Puddings on the Deck. In less than 10 minutes, you can be over in Meadows, where you can start the day at Mawson House, Natural Living, Little Mint, Pik a Pie, Balance for the Mind & Soul, Meadows Bakery or Gordo’s Café.

On your drive home to ‘Maccy’, stop by Karrawatta, a tiny winery for a tasting experience.

The real estate

While Macclesfield might not be a popular ‘lifestyle’ suburb for real estate in the Adelaide Hills, it shouldn’t be overlooked with a median house price of $383,000. In fact, it’s a high-demand market, with 1,487 visits per property vs. the 1,024 South Australian average.

However, it’s not a suburb with high turnover, as records show there has only been 24 properties sold in Macclesfield in the past 12 months. 44.7% of residents are couples without children, most likely those who have ‘left the nest’ with the largest age group between 40-59 years old.
