The Adelaide Hills, in 5 years’ time?
Earlier this month, Bird in Hand, one of the premium wineries in the Adelaide Hills, revealed a $30 million upgrade. This announcement is on the back of their recent win, as ‘‘Red Winemaker of the Year’.
The revamp will include an exclusive 40-seat wine and culinary experience, art gallery, increased cellar door space, tasting rooms, and new landscaped gardens. In talks with The Lead, Founder Andrew Nugent said he hopes the project will support their goal of becoming one of the world’s leading wineries (and pre-eminent international tourist destinations). The value of real estate in the Adelaide Hills is only going to increase in value in the coming years and decades.
Adelaide Hills: A destination lifestyle
Nugent had more to say on the news. “We intend to create a space of global, cultural and artistic paramountcy that helps secure our state and region as an imperative on the world wine tourism map,” he said.
“That means not only increasing our ability to cater for growing demand but also shining light on the outstanding winemakers, food producers, artists and designers that we nurture here.”
Our Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula winemakers are certainly finding inventive and experimental ways to leverage the great wines, produce, art and culture we have on our doorstep.
D’arenberg’s ‘Cube’ is an award-winning example. The news marks an exciting time for wineries, as well as the greater Adelaide Hills community. An article was released, announcing a third lane will be added to the South Eastern Freeway to ease traffic congestion (and improve safety).
“The third lane on the South Eastern Freeway in each direction between Crafers and Stirling will help ease traffic congestion and reduce travel times for the 54,000 motorists using this section of the freeway every day,” according to South Australian Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government, Stephan Knoll.
This project will make commuting from the Hills to the city, even quicker.
While we don’t have a crystal ball to see what the Hills will be like in five years, with the rate it’s growing, we predict that Mount Barker will turn into a micro city. Like the new attractions, these infrastructure projects will boost the value of real estate in the Adelaide Hills.
With towns surrounded by vineyards, only 20-30 minutes from the city, the Hills has always been a special place, geographically. In the years to come, we’re going to see more innovation, commercially… and a collective spirit that priorities lifestyle, above all.
And with cycling and hiking trails, pristine beaches at hand and all sorts of fun ways to get out and about in the Hills, you’ll have the best of both worlds – uplifting lifestyle, and an ambitious easy-to-get-to, small city.
