In the Adelaide Hills, foodies are spoiled for choice. From wineries and tasting plates, charming cafes, markets and pubs, good food imprints life in the Hills. It’s one of the many benefits of having an Adelaide Hills property.
There is the signature, Adelaide Hills institutions, like Auchendarroch and Mount Lofty House. But our region is also peppered with Mom and Pop-style eateries and restaurants that feel like you’ve stumbled upon a secret location.
Whether you want a coffee or sauv blanc in hand, here are a few special spots that’ll keep you fabulously full this weekend.
Wines, vines & no lines, in the Adelaide Hills
Beyond your real estate Adelaide Hills search, take a drive around the region and stop in at Summertown’s Greenhill Wines Cellar Door and Café. You’ll get some of the best views of Piccadilly Valley, grazing on tasting plates in a gorgeous 1880s settler’s cottage. It perfectly embodies old meets new.
In the running for ‘Young Gun of the Wine Wineslinger Award’ is Summertown Astrologist. It looks like a wine bar that belongs in a city. It’s stylish, with that Hills customer service.
Beer & bakeries
Beer, a bakery and café at one location? It’s Uraidla Republic, of course. You’re sorted, for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Craft beer and experimental distilleries are rivalling wine in the Adelaide Hills. Left Barrell Brewing is a must-try if you’re into artesian beers with fun names, like Bob’s Ya Dunkel.
Coffee & chocolate
Emma and Ivy is a plant lover’s heaven. A plant studio turned café, the Hills-inspired menu is a testament to how strong our region is in food and wine. Stall 1195 is a cosy, retro brunch spot made for cyclists and coffee enthusiasts (without the ‘I’m gluten-intolerant’ or ‘I’m vegan’ ordering guilt).
Got a sweet tooth? Head to Hahndorf Hill Winery for the ChocoVino experience. It’s CNN’s ‘Top 10 global adventures for chocoholics’ and it’s basically in your Adelaide Hills property’s backyard. With some of the world’s best wine and chocolate served up, it’s going to be hard to top this experience.
And, farmers markets!
If you’re a market meandering kind of gal (or guy), you’re in the right region. You know the events that draw the crowds (we’re looking at you, Stirling) but have you heard of farmers markets in Mount Pleasant and Uraidla?
We can’t forget the growers who sell at roadside stalls and farm gates. Drive along the stretch between Verdun and Balhannah, and between Piccadilly and Summertown.
While wine puts the Adelaide Hills on the world map, it’s the variety, experimentation and connection to its terrain that makes our region a foodie haven. It’s going to take more than a few weekends to even touch the surface and half the adventure is discovering new foodie spots.
