The best suburbs in the Adelaide Hills Series: Echunga & Meadows

There’s a cluster of towns in the Adelaide Hills that appeal to lifestyle lovers who ‘want it all.’ Go one direction and you’re in McLaren Vale, drive another way and you’ll reach Mt Lofty and the city. The next direction will take you to Goolwa and the Fleurieu Peninsula, and the next to Mount Barker.

It’s a trifecta of towns that are on the cusp of these hotspot regions: Echunga, Meadows, and Macclesfield. When it comes to Hills charm, it doesn’t get much better than this pocket of the region. Looking at real estate in the Adelaide Hills? Put on your Sunday best and take a drive here.

The Echunga & Meadows lifestyle

Being this close to the world-famous McLaren Vale, this area is peppered with wineries. Two cellar doors stand out: Karrawatta and Perrini Wines. At Karrawatta Cellar Door, settle in with good wine and food for the afternoon with friends, learn about winemaking, and sprawl out on the lawn or near the fire (season permitting). Top Note and Fox Gordon Winery also sit just outside of Meadows.

Meadow’s shoulders Kuitpo Forest, a gorgeous spot for walking trails, cycling, and picnics. Love music, art and cheese? Stop by the Cheese Factory Studios Gallery on your way to Echunga’s Honey Moon Vineyard, before grabbing a bite at the Hagen Arms, a historic mid 18th century pub. Both suburbs have their own primary schools.

The real estate

In Meadows, the median three-bedroom house for sale is $361,000. There are about 785 visits per property, versus the 1,095 South Australian average. Established couples and families make up the higher percentage of people (30.9%), followed by older families (24.5%) and mature families (11.4%).

Echunga has a population of 1,103 people, with the average age between 40 to 59 years. 86% of residents own their house, while just 14% of people rent. In comparison, Meadows is slightly bigger, with 1,352 people. It’s a more affordable town to buy a house in the Adelaide Hills than its bigger counterparts, like Mount Barker.
