About Nairne

One of South Australia’s earliest settlements, founded by Matthew Smillie, who named the town after the maiden name of his wife Elizabeth Corse Nairne.

Established in 1839, only three years younger than the state of South Australia, Nairne still retains its colonial village feel.

Historic stone buildings are put to vibrant contemporary use for shopping, business and entertainment - just as they have for nearly two centuries.

Nairne, located just 10 kms from the major regional centre of Mount Barker, is one of the district’s unique townships, (which make up the District of Mount Barker) each with its own diversity and characteristics of beauty and history, providing a wonderful lifestyle for residents and a wide range of experiences for visitors.
